A lifetime in healthcare, a deeper understanding of the whole person

I’m Gail, founder of Middlefield Wellness Centre in Fife.

My approach has been shaped by more than 40 years in healthcare, including 27 years working as a nurse within the NHS and more than 15 years exploring and practising complementary approaches to health and well-being.

Those years have taught me something important: what we experience in one part of the body does not always begin, or end, there.

The nervous system, posture, movement, lifestyle, nutrition and emotional experiences can all be connected. This is why my work looks beyond individual symptoms and considers the person as a whole.

My Journey

From Nursing to CranioSacral Therapy

For 27 years, I worked as a nurse within the NHS. My nursing career gave me an invaluable foundation in healthcare and a deep respect for conventional medicine.

In 2008, while I was still nursing, I began training in CranioSacral Therapy. As my understanding and experience of CranioSacral Therapy developed, I became increasingly interested in looking at the body as an interconnected whole and exploring factors that may sometimes be overlooked when attention is focused primarily on symptoms.

By 2010, I knew that I wanted to pursue CranioSacral Therapy as the next stage of my career.

After 27 years in nursing, I made the decision to leave the NHS and dedicate myself to developing my work in CranioSacral Therapy and complementary healthcare.

I had come to recognise that, while conventional medicine has an essential role, it does not always provide all the answers people are looking for. I wanted the freedom to explore the wider connections that may influence a person’s health and well-being.

Since then, I have continued to develop my knowledge and training, bringing together different approaches while keeping the nervous system and the individual person at the centre of my work.

I didn’t turn my back on conventional healthcare. I chose to broaden the way I could support people.

How I Work

Looking beyond symptoms

When someone comes to see me, I don’t begin with the assumption that I already know what they need. I listen.

I look at what they are experiencing, but I also consider the wider picture. This may include their nervous system, posture, movement, physical restrictions, lifestyle, nutrition and other factors that could be influencing their well-being.

Sometimes these connections are obvious. Sometimes they are less so.

My role is to help explore those connections and identify an approach that is appropriate for the individual.

Depending on your needs, this may involve an assessment, gentle hands-on therapy, postural work, lifestyle and nutritional support, or an approach that can be provided remotely.

There is no standard pathway because no two people are exactly the same.

The Principles Behind My Work

Look beyond the symptom

Symptoms can provide useful information, but they may not tell us the whole story. I consider what else may be influencing how your body is functioning and feeling.

See the whole person

The nervous system does not exist separately from the rest of the body. Posture, movement, physical tension, lifestyle, nutrition and emotional experiences may all influence one another.

Make it personal

I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. The support I recommend is based on you, your circumstances and what we discover together.

Work gently with the body

Many of the approaches I use are gentle and non-invasive. Rather than forcing change, my work is designed to support the body and encourage greater balance, awareness and well-being.

Experience You Can Trust

My learning has continued throughout my career. I have trained in a range of complementary approaches that allow me to consider health and well-being from different perspectives rather than viewing every person through a single therapeutic method.

Why the Nervous System Matters to Me

The nervous system plays an important role in how we respond and adapt to what is happening both within us and around us.

Stress, physical tension, movement, posture and our day-to-day experiences can all influence how the nervous system responds.

This is why nervous system regulation sits at the heart of much of my work.

My aim isn’t simply to make the body “calm”. A healthy nervous system needs to be able to respond when necessary and settle when the demand has passed.

I am interested in supporting that ability to adapt and helping the body move towards greater balance.

A Little More About Me

I’m naturally curious.

Even after more than four decades in healthcare, I am still fascinated by the human body and by the connections that can sometimes be overlooked when we concentrate on one symptom or one area.

That curiosity is one of the reasons I continue learning. I enjoy asking questions, exploring possibilities and helping people understand their bodies more clearly.

I established Middlefield Wellness Centre in the Fife countryside to create a place where people can be heard and supported without feeling rushed.

My connection with horses has also shaped the way I observe movement, tension and the body’s quieter ways of communicating.

What You Can Expect From Me

You can expect to be listened to.

You can ask questions and take the time you need to understand the different options available to you.

I will explain why I am suggesting a particular approach rather than expecting you to choose a therapy simply because you recognise its name.

Sometimes an assessment may be the most useful place to begin. At other times, a particular therapy or programme may be appropriate.

And if I believe that something falls outside my scope of practice, I will say so.

The starting point is always you.
