A gentle, whole-body approach centred around the nervous system
New Vision Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on approach that looks at the body as a whole rather than concentrating only on where a symptom is being experienced.
It works with restrictions and patterns within the body that may influence the balanced function of the central nervous system.
Before your first appointment, I take a detailed history with you by telephone. This allows me to understand what has brought you to see me and gather the information I need before we begin the hands-on work.
I provide in-person New Vision Therapy sessions at Middlefield Wellness Centre in Fife.
What is New Vision Therapy?
New Vision Therapy, or NVT, is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on whole-body approach that considers restrictions and patterns within the body’s tissues and how these may influence the balanced function of the central nervous system.
The work also takes into account pathways associated with the vagus nerve and the way different areas of the body may influence one another.
Rather than concentrating only on the area where you are experiencing a symptom, I look at the relationships between different areas of the body.
A brief physical assessment helps guide where I begin, but New Vision Therapy is primarily hands-on work rather than an appointment centred on assessment.
The techniques are gentle and non-manipulative and are carried out through clothing.
For me, one of the most important aspects of NVT is this ability to look beyond the symptom and work with the wider patterns I find within the body, with the aim of supporting nervous system regulation and greater overall balance.
For a concise introduction to the approach, read What is New Vision Therapy?
Looking Beyond the Symptom
Where you feel something may not tell us the whole story
It is natural to focus on the place where you feel discomfort or restriction. But the body does not work as a collection of completely separate parts.
Posture, movement, muscular tension, fascia, previous injuries and compensatory patterns can all influence the way different areas of the body move and respond. For example, an area that feels restricted may sometimes be compensating for something happening elsewhere.
This is why I do not begin New Vision Therapy by assuming that the place where you feel something is necessarily the only place I should work.
This whole-body approach means the hands-on work may take me to an area that seems unrelated to where you initially feel the problem. I follow the patterns and restrictions I find rather than treating only the site of the symptom.
What Happens Before My First Appointment?
Your telephone consultation
Before your first New Vision Therapy session, I arrange a telephone consultation with you to take a detailed history.
This gives us time to discuss what you are experiencing, relevant health information and anything else that may be important for me to know before your hands-on appointment.
Taking this history beforehand means that when you arrive at Middlefield Wellness Centre, we can spend the majority of your appointment on the New Vision Therapy work itself.
If anything in your history suggests that New Vision Therapy may not be appropriate, or that you should seek medical advice before proceeding, I can discuss this with you before your appointment.
New Vision Therapy and the Nervous System
Supporting regulation and greater balance
The nervous system is constantly responding to information from both inside and outside the body.
Its role is not simply to keep you calm. A healthy, responsive nervous system needs to be able to react when necessary, adapt as circumstances change and move between different states appropriately.
New Vision Therapy considers physical patterns and restrictions that may influence the way the body and central nervous system function together.
My aim is not to force your nervous system into a particular state. I use gentle hands-on techniques designed to support regulation and help the body move towards greater balance.
What Happens During a New Vision Therapy Session?
You remain fully clothed throughout your New Vision Therapy appointment, so comfortable clothing is ideal.
Because I have already taken your history during our telephone consultation, we do not need to spend a large part of your appointment going over the same information again.
At the beginning of the session, I carry out a brief physical assessment, usually around five minutes. This helps me identify the patterns and restrictions that will guide where I begin the hands-on work.
The majority of your appointment is then spent carrying out New Vision Therapy.
I use gentle, non-manipulative hands-on techniques and work with the restrictions and tissue patterns I identify throughout the body.
I may work in an area that is different from where you originally noticed your symptoms. This is because NVT considers how different areas of the body may be connected rather than treating each area in isolation.
I continue to observe how the tissues respond as I work and allow the session to develop according to what I find.
Why is the first appointment 90-minutes?
Your first New Vision Therapy appointment is longer because the initial hands-on work needs more time. The physical assessment itself is brief.
The additional time allows me to work more fully with the tissue restrictions and patterns identified during that first session rather than rushing the process into a standard 60-minute appointment.
Follow-up appointments are generally shorter because we have already begun that initial work and I can continue from what we have previously identified.

The brief physical assessment at the beginning of your appointment helps me identify where I may need to begin the hands-on work.
I am not using this assessment to diagnose a medical condition.
I am looking for patterns and restrictions within the body that may be relevant to the way different areas are functioning together. This may include:
- Differences in movement
- Tissue tension
- Areas of restriction
- Patterns of compensation
The assessment itself takes only a few minutes. It is a way of helping me decide where to begin, rather than being the main focus of your appointment.
As I work, I continue to pay attention to how the tissues respond and use that information to guide the session.
The Role of Fascia and Other Tissues
Why one area of the body may influence another
Fascia is part of the connective tissue network running throughout the body, but New Vision Therapy is not simply a technique for working with fascia.
The body is interconnected through muscles, fascia and other soft tissues, and a restriction in one area may influence patterns elsewhere.
This helps explain why the area I work with may not always be the place where you initially noticed discomfort or restriction.
The purpose is not to chase the symptom around the body. It is to follow the physical patterns I find and work gently with the tissues involved.
What Might I Experience?
Everyone experiences New Vision Therapy differently.
Some people find the gentle hands-on work relaxing. You may notice warmth, softening, movement, changes in tension or simply a greater awareness of different areas of your body. Other people notice very little while the session is taking place.
There is no particular sensation you need to experience and no response that proves a treatment has worked.
I am more interested in how your body responds as a whole than in trying to create a dramatic reaction during the appointment. Individual experiences vary.
My Approach to New Vision Therapy
My background means I rarely look at one area of the body in isolation.
My years in nursing, my experience with CranioSacral Therapy and my continuing interest in nervous system regulation all influence the way I practise New Vision Therapy.
Your history gives me important context before we begin. The brief physical assessment then helps guide my starting point.
From there, the hands-on work becomes the focus of the session.
I work gently with the tissues and restrictions I find, observing how the body responds and allowing that response to guide what I do next.
I do not follow the same sequence with every person because the patterns I find will be individual to you.
That is one of the reasons New Vision Therapy fits naturally with the way I work at Middlefield Wellness Centre: I look beyond the symptom and follow the connections within the body.
New Vision Therapy and Conventional Healthcare
New Vision Therapy is a complementary approach. It is not intended to replace medical assessment, diagnosis or treatment.
If something you tell me suggests that medical assessment would be appropriate, I may recommend speaking with your GP or another suitable healthcare professional.
Likewise, if you are already receiving medical care, New Vision Therapy may be considered alongside that care where appropriate.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
There is no standard number of New Vision Therapy sessions that everyone needs.
The 90-minute first session gives me the time needed to carry out the initial hands-on work without rushing the process.
After that, follow-up appointments are usually 60-minutes.
How you respond is individual, and I do not recommend a predetermined number of sessions simply because another person has experienced something similar.
We can review how you are responding and decide whether further sessions may be appropriate as we go.
